Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University — is one of the oldest and biggest medical universities in Ukraine. It is one of the leading medical universities of the IV level of accreditation. LNMU begins from the Medical Faculty of Lviv University, which was opened on November 16, 1784, according to the privilege of the Austrian emperor Josef II. In 2009 University celebrated its 225th anniversary.

Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University is one of the leading medical university with the IV level of accreditation. 

In 2017, according to the international Webometrix rating, which analyzes the indicators of about 22 thousand universities from around the world by the level of their presence in the network; Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University took first place among domestic medical universities and 16th place among all Ukrainian universities.

Nowadays Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University includes 6 faculties, a medical college, 78 departments (including 47 clinical, as well as 19 basic for higher medical educational institutions of Ukraine), 14 educational buildings, Dental Medical Center, educational industrial pharmacy, training simulation center, botanical garden, central research laboratory and laboratory of industrial toxicology, research center for antitumor testing, scientific library, 9 dormitories, student nutrition complex, 4 museums.

The annual contingent of the University is about 20,000 people, including 6,273 students, 1,164 interns, 11,593 students of the Faculty of Postgraduate Education.

Scientific and pedagogical work is provided by 1421 full-time scientific, scientific-pedagogical and pedagogical workers, among them 177 doctors of sciences and 755 candidates of sciences, including 133 professors, 401 associate professors.

In terms of the number of foreign students, the University is one of the leaders among higher medical educational institutions of Ukraine, which testifies to its high authority in the world market of educational services. Foreign citizens from almost 50 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and America are trained at the University, of which more than 80 percent study in English.

Clinical training of students, interns and residents of the Faculty of Postgraduate Education is conducted at 50 clinical departments. All clinical bases have the necessary number of highly qualified specialists, a sufficient level of material and technical base and the necessary premises. The university also has its own clinical base - Dental Center.

The Scientific Library of Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University is actively working and has printed and electronic resources for ease of use. The main information array of the library is about 650 thousand copies.

A campus stretched out next to the educational buildings. The nine dormitories can accommodate about 3,500 people. Here are all the conditions for learning (there are reading rooms, computer rooms), everyday life (dormitories have canteens, cafes, a workshop for sewing and repairing clothes and shoes, hairdresser, laundry) and recreation (there are sports rooms). The total area of the University campus is over 10 hectares.

The University began training foreign students in 1961. Since then, more than 3000 students from Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America have completed their education, received the Medical, Dental or Pharmaceutical degree here and now are successfully working as a doctors. More then 300 foreign citizens completed postgraduate training, and 70 foreign graduates achieved their Ph.D. degree here. Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University is listed in World Health Organization (WHO), World Directory of Medical Schools, is certified by ECFMG of USA.

In 2019/2020 academic year 1334 foreign citizens from 47 countries of the world are studying at the Faculties of General Medicine, Dentistry Pharmacy (96,9% of foreign students study in English language). 386 foreigners were admitted to the University, 365 of them to the 1st year of study, including 326 students for the specialty “222 Medicine”, 31 – specialty “221 Dentistry”, 8 – specialty “226 Pharmacy, Industrial Pharmacy”, 7 – Postgraduate training. The range of countries from which foreigners have come to study at the University is very wide: Poland, Bulgaria, Germany, USA, Canada, Great Britain, Cyprus, Israel, Ecuador, India, Pakistan, Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, Jordan, Syria, Palestine, Nigeria, Ghana, Zambia, Kenya, Namibia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Angola, Tunisia, and others. Factors that favor the growth of foreign students’ number are high academic standards of the University as well as the gradual improvement of everyday life conditions and of the city infrastructure. 



Teaching of Medicine, Dentistry and pharmacy for foreign students is carried out in two languages – Ukrainian and English. English Medium Program for foreign students was implemented in 1997. Now 1258 foreigners (96,9% from the whole number of foreign students) are studying in English. Foreign citizens who are not strong enough in Ukrainian language can enter a one-year Preparatory course, which includes an intense language program, as well as some basic training in Chemistry, Biology and Physics. Graduate students of this course can be enrolled in the 1st year of study in Lviv National Medical University.

The University's international activities are aimed at further integration into the European, world medical and educational fields with the aim of studying and implementing best practices in the field of higher medical education, developing scientific research, promoting the achievements of the University in the world.

The University works closely with different organizations in Poland, Jordan, Egypt, India, Bulgaria, Nigeria, Ghana, Zambia, etc. The University scientists are working on joint scientific topics with leading scientific and educational institutions of Germany, Hungary, the USA, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, France, Sweden, Poland, Belgium and others.
